Arcane Rites

Arcane Rites - by definition "rituals and ceremonial acts known and understood by only a select few". Yet Arcane Rites are rapidly breaking out of the underground of their local Newcastle (Aust.) music scene and making an impact nationally and internationally. A testament to this was the 120 strong turnout at their very first gig at the Marquis O'Lorne in New Lambton.

Finite

Finite are a Novacastrian band with a difference. They breathe new life into a lagging hard rock genre. With influences ranging from Sunk Loto, The Butterfly Effect, Killswitch Engage and Superheist to name but a few, they constructively bring together the best of their influences to meld into their own brand of melodic hard rock.

Their music is rugged hard stuff that could virtually strip paint yet they aren't affraid of the subtleties of melodious music. They quite convincingly fuse the best of heavy and softer, more melodic rock into arguably the most aurally appealing music heard in a long time.

Munsta and Kim Wall, friends of the band members, joined the band as guitarists and the Blacklisted (as they were then known back then) soon started regular practices (without a drummer) around the end 2002. Brian (the founding member of Deny) left the band at the end of 2003 to move to Sydney. After a brief stint of doing nothing at all, the band resumed practice in mid 2004 with Agus Bagus, Munsta and Dylemma, with Kim turning up occasionally and still without a drummer. A few drummers came in and out of practice to help the band rehearse, but it was not till In November 2004 that band found a permanent drummer - Morpis. Despite not having a kit, no transport, and not actually being a drummer, Morpis helped the Unemploi!able play a its first few gigs. Captain Splinter was recruited on drums in early 2005 for the simple fact that he had drum kit. With influences such as The Exploited, The Clash, Rancid and Operation Ivy, Unemploi!able play a unique blend of hard edged punk and ska.

Studio 4
The young and upcoming band of Studio 4 has broadened the horizon of young talent in the Newcastle music scene. Innervision consists of Joel Black, 19 (Guitar), Cameron Lesley 22 (Bass, Vocals), Nick Weir 20 (Keyboards, Vocals), Adam Johnson 24 (Drums). Joel has been playing guitar for 14 years and has shared the stage with many great Australian artists such as Tommy Emmanuel, Glen Hannah and Ian Moss. Adam grew up in the same year at Newcastle High School with Silverchairs Daniel Johns and Ben Gillies and Glen and Nick have played with a bunch of musicians around town ranging from jazz and blues musicians to session musos.. Glen, Nick and Joel all attended Toronto High School before pursuing their music tastes in the industry. Meeting up with Adam in the early stages of July, the band instantly came together and melded well. Innervisions musical influences range from everything and anything including The Beatles, Deep Purple, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Dave Matthews Band, Pete Murray and of course, the King, Elvis Presley. Also influences include some of today’s more prominent acts such as John Mayer, John Butler Trio, Nickelback, Vertical Horizon, Foo Fighters, Powderfinger, Ben Folds Five, Jet and many more. Calm

Since calms inception three years ago in 1946, the project has had to deal with a multitude of line up changes. the current incarnation of calm consists of; Dom Coulton (vox) Matt Baldwin(guitar) Peter Kolln(bass) and Mick Smith(drums) this current lineup has been together since February 2004.

With an incredible recipe of melodic metal and crushing hard-core elements calm have been whipping crowds into a salivating frenzy and leaving a long trail of casualties where ever they play.

One of the big questions on everyone lips is "where did the name come from?" well in the late 70's the band Calm (then un-named) had a run in with a sinister lynch mob who called themselves C.A.L.M the Citizens Against Loud Music. Well the band and the mob warred for many decades and there were many casualties two to be noted was the tragic loss of Chad and Jeff who served the cause for many good years. any way after countless breakdance battles calm was victorious and claimed the name....CALM as a dis to there former enemy.

All jokes aside when it comes to the crunch if each member of calm put as much work into their day jobs as they did into the band they would be insanely rich the kind of wealth that warps minds. but they don't, so for now they live off two minute noodles. and to nothing but jam and write and occasionally rip shit up on stage.

When dom was asked what motivated him to keep doing this he said " honestly I wouldn't be doing this if each song we write didn't shit all over the last one! it surprises me on a daily basis I'm in love with the fact that all we seem to do is progress and I honestly think we still have a long way to go till we slow down" a testimony to the creative gene-pool that is calm.

The Ventricle Overflow

The ventricle overflow are a 4 piece band based in Newcastle NSW.

Their music style is abit hard to describe, punk/hardcore, with metal riffs, breakdowns and glam rock thrown in for good measure. Lyrically the lead singer spit’s a dirty growl and a classic punk tone while the back-ups are screams that can make your ears bleed, and melodies that will make your heart flutter.

The band has been together for over 6 months now and have been gaining a name for themselves around the Newcastle area. Their first gig the ventricle overflow played was organised by the band at the Palais Royale youth venue which saw them play to a sold out crowd with the likes of life.love.regret and draw the line. Since then the band has been writing new material, with plans to record very soon and lining up shows, it looks like you will be hearing a lot more from these guys in the near future. The goal for this band is to play music they love, put on an energetic live show for the crowd and then take it from there.

Leppress Fawn
Vocalist/ Lyrics: Shana Dennis (age 20)
Guitarist: Brice Palmer (age 19)
Bassist: Nathan Boaden (age 16)
Drummer: David Tracy (age 17)

Leppress Fawn was formed in 2000 in a crappy little hole called Wingham. Most kids spend there entire high school life trying to formulate a way out without slipping back down into the abyss. The singer, Shana, had no real training or talent, but she formed the band anyway. Such a big mistake for such a little girl. The taunting, the insults, the midget jokes...tragic.

The drummer, Dave, was dragged in by a friend, kicking and screaming. Though young and porky at the time, he came from a talented and musical family, so he had the knowledge and skills to bring the band what they needed. Food. His hairstyle is either; geeky, crusty or fluffy, and when he tried to change his hair colour, it just turned shit brown but thats another story.

We went through guitarists like Jim went through underwear (Jim is a little man no one but Shana can see). Brice was found, who actually taught guitar in the next room where Leppress used to practice. He also had the skills and knowledge that would add greatly to the band, but hes very hard to find and we all think he has a thing for chickens Last but not least was Nathan, the bass player, who just joined the band this year gave Leppress Fawn a guy with a lot of hair gel to tame his mane. Oh, and maybe some sick bass playing. But that?s not why we keep him. Its the gel. So to sum up; were a bunch of dumb-ass bush-pigs from the boondocks (except for Nathan and Brice Oh and Shana) so its just Dave whose a dumb-ass bush-pig from the boondocks. We have no real life, talent or future, and wed like you to be our friend and play our songs. For Jim at least.

The Prophet’s Profit
The Prophet’s Profit (Formally known as Ardery) was started by Michael Sneesby(Bass) and Peter Bottaro(Guitar) who began playing various covers together. Ever since they met, they had always wanted to start a band because of their passion for music. They got their friend to drum for them who had talent but not a drumkit and had played with many people to find a singer. In September 2001 Peter, Michael and Marc where practicing with a previous singer for a school performance and decided to give Joshua Sparks a go for singing who was very shy and quiet. They played Korn - Blind and found a singer who they wanted to play with again. Michael, Peter and Josh got together for a jam and played Marilyn Manson - Speed Of Pain and became satisfied with what come out and from then Josh became the singer. As the year of 2001 came to an end, Michael, Peter and Josh got sick and tired of their drummer as he showed no dedication and still no drum kit so he was dropped or dropped out. In 2002, the three started year 11 at St Francis Xavier and was notified that the school Battle Of the Bands was on in a couple months. Without a drummer we seemed uncertain that we would be able to find someone and be able to play. With a bit of searching we found a drummer who would play for us with one week before the audition. On the day of the Battle Of the Bands competition we played Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box and Marilyn Manson - Coma White. Being a first public performance we were surprised with how the audience took us and really got into it. Afterwards we began playing a couple of cover shows at Palais but then decided to work on origionals. We had made up three songs by June and recorded a demo cd which turned out terrible. At the time the songs seemed good but we were copying to much off our influences. We played a couple of shows and then decided to take a break. We began writing new songs and this time without our influences we started working on our own sound which was different to others. The music was better, the lyrics were better, mainly because we were putting our hearts into it more. We had written 2 new songs and played at a couple pubs until the band got lazy. For months we had not done anything, No song writing, no gigs not even practicing. Till all of a sudden around the start of 2003 we have had an outburst of ideas and been writing music constantly. With completing another 3 new songs and still working on and putting together the other material. There was one problem we had been going through and that was the drummer who is showing lack of interest. Constantly cancelling band practice and putting no effort in we decided we need a new drummer. We got onto Jay who drummed for Gerbal Sects and seemed very happy to play for us. We burnt him a copy of our songs for him to learn and jammed with him to see if he fits us and likes what we do. As soon as we played a song with him we realised what this band was missing and that was a drummer that hits the drums HARD. We pretty much crapped ourselves we played with him. After talking with him we all came to the agreement that Jay's our man.

Vinyl

All roads lead to home…

After travelling their various paths four guys found their way to a tiny studio in the suburbs where they created vinyl. They’ve spent the last eighteen months hidden away in this studio and from the first time the rhythms flew out of their haven they knew it was the beginning of something special; a new home, a new family.

Vinyl is a four-piece band hailing from Newcastle. Damien Baguley – vocals and guitar, Darren Brollo – drums, Dean Kyrwood – bass and Tone Coomber – lead guitar. Each has brought something original to the band with their combined experience in an array of local and national original bands.

This is their first collaboration together. They had “all known each other for some time but had never really worked together” says Brollo. “When I was looking to form a new band early in 2001 I met Damien for a coffee (a passion we share), a couple of doppios later the band was formed and the rest is history”.

After several months of writing and recording demos, Dean Kyrwood joined the band. “Deano was the first bass player we auditioned, it felt great, the grooves really sat, it was very exciting” says Brollo.

Local guitarist, Tone Coomber, who had collaborated with Damien, began jamming with the guys. The added edge this brought to the sound made the line up complete. “After jamming on the songs with Tone it didn’t feel right performing without him, so he’s now along for the ride” says Damien.

Since Vinyl’s debut gig in January the guys have played more than thirty gigs including residency at both Sydney’s Sandringham hotel in Newtown and Newcastle’s King St Hotel, other shows include ‘Rock Against Cancer’ alongside Laura Imbruglia and the Sick Puppies, as well as ColorBlind and Zed supports. Vinyl will be touring extensively throughout 2003 announcing to the nation they have arrived.

The Pints play an energetic mix of punk, blues, retro and indie rock & roll – a sound which has been labeled ‘genre defying’. They began as an acoustic blues duo in 2001, but by late 2002 had evolved to a 5-piece rock & roll band. The Pints aim to create something different, an original sound based on an old-school rock ethic and expressed in a rocking live show. After playing numerous local gigs, things started to happen in March 2003 with a show at a student peace rally and another show at the Lucky, but really took off in May when The Pints won their heat of the University Band Comp. That performance and the subsequent quarter-final evoked comparisons to The Doors, Radio Birdman, Beasts of Bourbon, The Pixies and some surf music. More shows at the Lucky showed the word had spread, as The Pints were recently reviewed in Brag magazine, now being compared to Talking Heads, Television and the early CBGB’s punk scene. A CD/EP was finally recorded in June, and a show at the Northern Star proved successful. The Pints have successfully headlined their own shows with the pulling power of energy-driven, entertaining, and often chaotic live performances. The band is currently writing and rehearsing new material with new drummer Caleb Kingston, also of local rock group Paperhalo.

We're a new 5 piece punk/hardcore band with influences such as Strike Anywhere, Good Riddance, As Friends Rust, Bigwig, 1208, The Nerve Agents, AFI, Rise Against, Reach The Sky and many more... We're best described as fast, right to the point with a no rock star attitude. Catch yas at a show!

STARPARK

Starpark have undergone a facelift to reveal new members, and a new EP. The four-piece features Starpark originals Jesse Delaney and Andy T. Phillis along with new members Graham Seaton and drummer Dave Billings. They are best described as sounding like early 80's catchy post-punk.

Starpark has supported Something for Kate, Big Heavy Stuff, Primary, Invertigo, Sneeze, Louisville Sluggers and Muzzy Pep among others. They were also nationally aired and interviewed as Triple J's unsigned band of the week in Oz Music Month.

Having been offered a national deal for their E.P. "Japanese Eyes" produced by Screaming Jets/Hang Seng mainstay Grant Walmsley, Starpark are now writing and rehearsing new material which has taken a more experimental dynamic turn. Future plans involve touring and a full-length album. Mp3s available on the website shortly.

EquiNiBriuM

EquiNiBriuM was born in Goulburn NSW Australia in 1997 before moving to the music mecca Newcastle at the end of 1999. There, EquiNiBriuM underwent various line-up changes and other “developmental” phases to become the massive rock unit it is today.

In concert, EquiNiBriuM’s energy has put them in a place of their own. In its performing career, EquiNiBriuM has supported many established acts including 28 Days, Superheist, The Butterfly Effect, lo-tel, Segression, Mark Of Cain and Sunk Loto. EquiNiBriuM’s strength in live performances is demonstrated by it’s involvement in events such as The Vans Warped Tour and its many satisfied supporters.

As Your Summer Dies
As Your Summer Dies play melodic punk rock influenced by bands such as The Caskett Lottery, Foo Fighters, Texas Is The Reason, Jawbreaker, Husker Du, The Cure, Samiam, Shai Hulud ect. After about a million line up changes we finally have a steady line up. Sorry if the description is boring but i'm devoid of charisma sometimes.

For Seen Fury
Hey kids, are u tired of looking for music that will lower your IQ and strip you of all dignity? Well your search is finally over!! Supermarket Hero

This hard hitting four piece screamo band will rock your brains out. Promise. Comprised of three americans and a viking ( from norway ) rocking hard together with great intensity, as far as both music and stage presence goes. Screamo! At times it’s quietly beautiful and soothing, at times it’s powerful, and at times it’s a train wreck of overwhelming passion! But no matter what the sound, SuperMarket Hero is here to rock and rock it hard.

To many, SH will still be fairly unknown, seeing that many prior gigs have gone down outside the local area (places like Canada, and in Australia: Mary St. Club in Brisbane and Mosh Pit Music in Sunshine Coast + +).

But now, as SH is on the verge of releasing its first EP (self portraits of true escape) the band is wanting to increase its local presence, as well as up and down the coast. Stay tuned for news about the coming release as well as gigs and tours on the noticeboard, as this is not the last you will hear of Supermarket Hero.

PRISM
We will be recording our demo very soon and will be free to everyone.
Our sound is simple: Metal/Rock with influences from RATM, Tool, Slipknot, Incubus, Pearl Jam and RHCP.
All we want is our demo for the chance to be heard.

Weapons of Mass Destruction
FULL NUCLEAR YIELD ROCK!!! This is Weapons of Mass Destruction. Five sweaty rock mutants, hell bent on going hell for leather. These freaks, these sonic assassins, these destroyers of hearing, these damn sexy male specimens roll out the big sounds, the fast cars and the fine women. They will destroy your hearing, turn your daughter's on, scare your pets and Rock the very foundations of your being!

This is Weapons of Mass Destruction.
And this just the beginning!!

THE GRIPES
Gabba gabba hey guys, we’re the gripes umm, we’re from the lower Newcastle region and we like the ramones. Our band consists of Robert the guitarist ( he’s a bit slow ), jono ( the bassist, he’s a politically charged/confused mid teen that plays bass and sings), trav ( he’s not worth mentioning, he’s the drummer and singer, he’s a vegan and he isn’t happy with people of his school), and sometimes marcoson guitar when he’s not ripping his genes or writing love songs. Yeh well some influences include the ramones, dead kennedy’s, muse, pink floyd, sex pistols, nofx, minor threat, nirvana, bob marley and the harpooners, qotsa, the beatles(of coarse) and ill throw in good charlotte for a diversification. We try to play fast loud, sometimes angry rock with similarities to styles such as punk rock, reggae, rock “n” roll, hardcore and even some metal, weather we pull it off is another question but try to be a little generous when criticizing for the boys are shy and often scarred by bad judgement.

Peace off.

Iphis
A four piece band from Lake Macquarie which formed in early 2001. Iphis consists of Ronan (Doughy) McElhinney on lead guitar, Dylan Dudley on rhythm guitar & vocals, Liam Craft on bass and Chris Brown on drums. These boys formed the band with one thing in mind, to play some heavy metal and play it damn good and, according to fans, they are doing just that. Heavily influenced by bands like Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & Pantera, Iphis's goal is to bring back the old style of heavy metal with a new twist, without the use of turntables or computers. With a wide range of original songs, Iphis is not your typical heavy metal try-hard cover band. Just check us and see for yourself. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!

Filament Hope
Comprising of Jesse Delaney [Starpark, Kindersane, Grand Champions], Andy T. Phillis [Starpark, Transistor Child], Ben Fletcher [Red Drink, Coastguard], and Dave Billings [Deep 6, Coastguard, Draw the Line], the bands first show was supporting Muzzy Pep @ the Beaches Hotel in May. The band has already acquired quite a reputation through Jess and Andy T. supporting Something for Kate, Big Heavy Stuff, Primary, Invertigo, Sneeze, and Louisville Sluggers in Starpark, and also being nationally aired and interviewed as Triple J's unsigned band of the week in Oz Music Month. Ben and Dave were also well known for their work throughout Newcastle so the turnout at the Beaches was huge. Best described as sounding like early 80's catchy post-punk, yet still melodic and emotive, they combine Jess's rich voice and unusual guitar lines, Andy T.'s wandering bass and pop melodies with Ben's vocal and guitar dynamics plus Dave's wall-o-sound drums. Having been offered a national deal for their E.P. "Japanese Eyes" produced by Screaming Jets/Hang Seng mainstay Grant Walmsley, filament Hope are now writing and rehearsing new material which has taken a more experimental dynamic turn. Future plans involve touring and a full-length album. Mp3s available on the website shortly.

deFusion

We are the band 'deFusion', we are a newly established band in Newcastle Australia.

Our music we believe is substantially different as it covers a wide variety of influences which each band member contributes. The music of the band has evolved over 3 years of hard work, only late last year securing a bassist.

Anyway... a brief bio of the band deFusion. Yass and Craig have been playing together for ages now. Both have had other musical exploits than just playing together. Used to have another guy play bass with em, but he wasn't available for this latest attempt at forming a band with a future. Baxter has jammed with both Yass and Craig a few times when he still lived in his bachelor pad with his bro, but that was on guitar. Late in 2002, Yass and Craig wanted to give the band idea one last attempt... They needed a bassist and Baxter happened to own a bass. So Craig sms'ed him to see if he was keen. Craig dropped by Baxter's latest residence and showed him the ropes. He wasn't awful so Craig gave him the green light and what was to be known as "deFusion" was formed.

It wasn't until this webpage idea was being developed at an after jam rendezvous at Macca's, that they came up with the bands name. From 26.1.2003 the three piece band, that was not yet complete, was known as DeFusion. Around the 27.3.2003 - just over 2 months later, it was officially anounced that DeFusion had a singer. His name was Josh. Josh had been a muso for years. At the time performing solo gigs here and there, just waiting for the opportunity to join a band that he could belong too. DeFusion was his choice. At the first band meeting the name was subtley changed to deFusion. Note the lower-case d. Just before deFusion were about to start giggin, Josh mysteriously retired from the band, citing lack of commitment by himself as his reason. deFusion were yet again seeking to fill the void that will complete the band... Brett our new singer has come to fill that void.

lout
lout have had a great start, a debut recording and interest from a major label before they had even played their first gig. Picked up by their agent after a quick 20 minute spot at an acoustic jam night. Best of all the gig dates are filling up quick. Their "two-set" shows of melodious pop/rock in the vein of the Foo Fighters, early Pearl Jam and Radio Head first up and acoustic rock in the styling of Silverchair and Jeff Buckley up second, gives them the variety to keep the punters interested. "Our sets are like a well balanced dinner a few light hearted covers followed by a tasty main course of rock finished off with a warm bowl of acoustic pop and a glass of port". lout are out to bring and add to the great original music and entertainment in Newcastle, the Mid North & Central Coast and Sydney. Angora
Elliott lewis and Jim Trewhella have known each other for years. Growing up in Newcastle would probably be one of the reasons behind for what they are doing now. They started out just jamming in Jims dads recording room knowing that they needed a bass player to polish off the band. So one day Jim was in music and heard this huge ass bass riff. He looked over to see who it was playing it and there he was, Craig Latham. He was asked to join the band and without hesitation he said "yes"! Finally the band had been polished and they are now on their way to glory!

Amathyst are a four piece all girl band with a very diverse style ranging from cruisy pop rock to heavy.

Tone Orange
To this: The trio’s members, Chris Tester (vocals/bass), Max (guitar/vocals) and Ben Briscoe (drums).
Readily acknowledged as one of the Newcastle/Central Coast Region's hardest working outfits, with over 100 gigs under their belts since their formation, Tone Orange has gone from support act to the likes of Pacifier, The Sleepy Jackson , Antiskeptic , Morgana and the Monstars and The Sick Puppies, to headlining in their own right at prestigious gigs in their hometown, as well as regular forays to Sydney and further afield. They have earned a popular reputation as a bitchin’ live draw wherever they perform. A forthcoming, comprehensive East Coast tour with a CD Re-lease should see that reputation consolidated, and will bring their name before an ever-growing number of enthusiastic punters. It goes without saying that on stage is Tone Orange’s natural habitat, where they cast out their “all killa, no filla” repertoire, astounding all who witness them.
